CLEANING AND MAINTAINING YOUR VEHICLE AWNING
Preventing mould growth
Vehicle awnings are regularly exposed to moisture, humidity and changing weather conditions. Without basic maintenance, mould and mildew can develop on the awning fabric over time.
Regular care will help keep your Clevershade 180°, 270° or 360° awning in top condition and extend its lifespan.
Why mould forms on awnings
Mould growth is usually caused by:
Packing the awning away wet
Storing the vehicle for long periods without deploying the awning
Camping in coastal or high-humidity environments
Limited airflow while the awning is stored
Simple maintenance habits that prevent mould
1. Always dry the awning before packing away
If your awning gets wet from rain or dew, fully deploy it and allow the fabric to dry completely before storing.
2. Open the awning after wet trips
If you have to pack the awning away wet, open it as soon as possible once you’re home to allow airflow and drying.
3. Periodically deploy during storage
Even when not in use, open the awning occasionally to allow the fabric to breathe and release trapped moisture.
4. Keep the fabric clean
Dirt and organic debris can hold moisture. Lightly rinse and brush the awning fabric as needed to keep it clean.
5. Use suitable cleaning products
Only use fabric-safe cleaners designed for outdoor awnings. Avoid bleach, as it can damage the fabric and protective coatings.
6. Ensure complete drying before travel
Before long-term storage or transport, confirm the awning fabric is fully dry.
Safety note
When inspecting or cleaning awning fabric, wearing gloves and a mask is recommended to reduce exposure to mould spores.
